Title | : | Empowerment of women through kitchen gardens - conceptualizing Urban agriculture - Opportunities and challenges |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr. VEENA H .N |
Abstract: Increasing urbanization has made living space very scarce and sparse. The urbanites have lost backyards, back up gardens and community spaces. The need for fresh vegetables and green leaves is increasing at the same time hence urban householders are turning towards kitchen gardens and urban farming. Creating an organic kitchen garden has become a fashion and passion with urbanites. Especially women are showing interest in kitchen gardening. This concept is gaining popularity as more and more women are looking at kitchen garden as a strategy towards empowerment and sustainability. Space constraints cultivating a garden for pesticide free vegetables and fruit may seem like a far-fetched idea. But this is seen as an achievable idea for women in urban India. This is assisting women to increase their responsiveness about nutritional intake value and diet consciousness among urban women.

Western countries have been marching towards national growth with provision for equitable involvement of women in all process of economic development. it is a proven fact that women make good banking customers. Studies have shown that women can add positively to bank's growth because they are considered as the consistent banking customers. They tend to have deeper relationships with financial Institutions all through their life. Hence it is imperative for nation with nearly 50% of the women population to incorporate inclusive banking strategies. Increasing women's financial inclusion is especially important in women empowerment process. Indian women disproportionately experience poverty and paucity of resources stemming from unequal divisions of labour and a lack of control over economic resources. There is a need to do research in gender studies, feminist theories, methodologies, women's movements, gender science and technology, gender politics and gender budgeting. This identity will lead to demand greater inclusive representation and this augmented representation will lead to creation of empowerment strategy realistically.
