Abstract: In mining, the unwatering of the aquiferous formations and the control of these last imply a good knowledge of local geology and a perfect approach of the hydrological factors which condition the mode of subsoil waters (supply of water in aquifers, fluctuation of the piezometric levels, etc). This approach will concentrate on the morphometric study of the catchment area of the Kinsenda river; the determination of the characteristics of relief and itshydrographic network. The morphometric, hydrographic and hypsometric study from the catchment area of the Kinsenda river brought out the following elements......

Abstract: This study developed a model for determining the shear strength of lateritic soils in a Banded Gneiss geologic unit. This was with a view to determining the effects of index properties and geology on the shear strength of selected soils. Lateritic soil samples were collected from selected locations within the Banded Gneiss geologic unit of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) campus, Ile-Ife, Southwestern Nigeria. Soil samples were subjected to laboratory analyses for index and other geotechnical properties relevant in the determination of shear strength. Relationships between shear strength and index properties were determined by developing and validating Multivariable Least......

Abstract: The study area is part of the Jos Plateau, where extensive mining of cassiterite - columbite took place for a period of 70 years. This is evident with mine ponds, pits and dams scattered within it, of which most have become water reservoirs for domestic, irrigation and industrial purposes. Of much concern is the prevalent occurrences of cancers of various types, skin and kidney diseases and so on amongst the inhabitants living around these mine sites. This research work seeks to understand the heavy metal contamination in the surface and groundwater resources; and its far-reaching impacts on human health. The hydrochemical investigations were conducted with the main aim of discovering the source(s) of heavy metal concentration and also to identify the principal pollutants in the water resources......

Abstract: Subsurface geotechnical investigations and subsequent reports are essential parts of the planning phase of many construction projects. These investigations in Ghana are commonly done using methods like trenching, boreholes and pitting, which gives direct and/or visual access to the subsurface material, and also allows sampling for laboratory analysis. However, the methods are expensive, time consuming and requires a lot of effort to execute, and the results are discreet, requiring extensive inter and extrapolation and a good expertise to make meaningful interpretations. Alternatively, the seismic refraction method was used to explore the subsurface material for their elastic properties, which could be related to some of the geotechnical properties or conditions at the site. The work was conducted on KNUST campus in Ghana, on the premises of the faculty of Art building. ......

Abstract: The search for solution to the menace of coastline erosion and submergence resulting from wave action and relative sea-level rise is seriously paving way for increasing sand search within the intertidal flats and offshore environments for beach nourishment. A very important aspect of this beach nourishment projects inevitably involves identification of potential offshore sand sources, the grain size pattern, its estimated volume and the mode of delivery of the sediment and its placement on the envisaged area to be reclaimed. To achieve this, an over water geotechnical sand search method was adopted, making use of a locally fabricated floating platform on which was mounted a Shell and-Auger Percussion Rig to survey the channel in and around the supposed dredging sites as to locate.....

Abstract: Continental intraplate volcanism is less expressed compared to other geodynamic frameworks. This volcanism is of obvious geodynamic interest because it is always related to the phenomena of rupture of the continental plates that can lead to the opening of the oceanic domains. The mapping and lithostratigraphy of the Kapande sector led to the development of geological sections that intercept basic intrusions of a gabbroic nature. The intrusive nature of these gabbros has been demonstrated by the existence of two facies, a fine border facies surrounding coarse facies in the heart of the intrusion. The petrographic examination of these rocks proves that they are characterized by a distinctly grainy texture with double-mic basic plagioclase, pyroxenes of monoclinic type, probably augite, opaque......

Abstract: Some residual lateritic soils derived from crystalline basement complex rocks of south-western Nigeria were investigated for some geotechnical properties to ascertaining their suitability as mineral seals in sanitary landfills. Investigative tests include specific gravity, grain size analysis, consistency limits, compaction, permeability and unconfined compression. The liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index (PI) values varied from 32.3 to 41 %, 19.2 to 21.3 % and 12.2 to 20.3 % respectively. Casagrande chart indicated inorganic clayey soils with low to medium plasticity. The computed clay activity ranged from 0.58 to 1.39, indicating Kaolinite and Illite as constituent clay minerals in the soils. The PI values (12.2 to 20.3 %) implied that the soils will exhibit low to medium swelling potential when wet. The Maximum Dry Density (MDD) and Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) values ranged from 1.67 to 2.01 g/cm3 and 12.9 to 22.9 % respectively. Hydraulic conductivity values varied from......

Abstract: Laboratory modeling studies using the resistivity method have been carried out to determine the location of anomalies in the form of iron and concrete which are placed in the soil at predetermined coordinates. In this study it was buried in sub surface cylinder iron anomaly, iron sheet anomaly and concrete anomaly. Dipole-dipole configuration resistivity method is used to determine the location of anomalies based on the resistivity of an anomaly in the form of iron and concrete. Retrieval of data with Dipole-dipole configuration is done by taking 21 tracks. Tracks.....
