ABSTRACT: Naturally occurring radionuclides such as 40K, 226Ra and 232Th are present in soils and sediments, with concentrations influenced by geology and human activities. Scrap metals, which may contain orphan radioactive sources, and flood events, which redistribute contaminated sediments, represent potential environmental pathways of exposure. This study evaluates the concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th in soils from scrap yards and flood-affected areas in Maiduguri, Nigeria, to determine associated radiological risks to the public.
