Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study is to establish a mediational model of business performance in small and medium enterprises. In this paper, the authors examine how the entrepreneur's personal entrepreneurial competencies: systematic planning and information-seeking influence small business performance. The objective through this model is to show that it is through the process of innovation these resources are transformed into business success. Design/methodology/approach: Based on data obtained from a sample of 462 private small firms drawn from the Amhara Region, Ethiopia, the study used a structural equation modelingto validate the mediational model of small business performance.
