ABSTRACT: Maize (Zea Mays L) performs a critical part in the survival of millions in Nigeria, particularly for smallholder farmers in Kaduna State. However, dependence on a single crop can be risky and limit livelihood options. This study investigates the socio-economic and institutional drivers of livelihood diversification among smallholder maize farmers in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Employing a multistage sampling procedure, data was sought from 405 smallholder maize producers based on their socio-economic and institutional profiles, and the types of non-farm activities undertaken by farmers were identified and analysed using descriptive statistics and the multinomial logit model.
