Abstract: Communication theory as a field (Craig, 1999), recommends seven traditions of communication as a way of reconstructing communication theory as a field. Each of these traditions seeks to understand and explain different phenomenon in the society. It is essential for higher degree research students to be well acquainted with different traditions so as to appreciate communication as a field, and be able to backup one‟s research with specific tradition. This will also help higher degree research students to comprehendembryonic fields in communication and eventuallymake available theoretical base for their research. This paper elucidates rhetorical and critical traditions and deliberates ontheir variations with other theorists within the selected traditions
