Title | : | The Cultural Problems of Educating the Homeless Children |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Fr. Bartholomew Chidili |
Abstract: Faced with the mounting social embarrassment caused by the homeless children abandoned at the mercy of their Mallams in the ubiquitous qu'ranic schools in the major northern cities of Nigeria, President Jonathan on 10thof April, 2012, inaugurated what one might call 'operation rescue the Almajirai School.' In inaugurating the school the president thought that the time had come when the nation should build on the moral foundations of the traditional school system to provide the almajirai with the conventional knowledge and skills that would enable them to fully realize their creative and productive potentials. But that noble thought was bedeviled by the hydra-headed cultural problems arising from political, economic, social and religious detractors. The paper examined these together with some other teething problems embedded in the body of the paper which ultimately exposed the education of the homelessas a herculean task to handle.

Country | : | Nigeria |
Authors | : | Dr. Dan Chima Amadi |
Abstract: The collapse of Apartheid in South Africa did not just mean the end of white minority rule but a slide in male power and the rise of matriarchy. Both J. M. Coetzee and Nadine Gordimer not only warn of the impending collapse of patriarchy but the consequences if it is replaced by phallocentricism.

Title | : | Mental Illness and Insanity in the Nigerian Law |
Country | : | Nigeria |
Authors | : | Abiama, Emmanuel Ekpedoho |
Abstract: This work examines the concepts of mental illness, insanity and insanity plea under the Nigerian law. Mental illness is a psychological syndrome associated with distress, impairment in an area or areas of functioning and that significantly increased risk of death, disability, or loss of freedom and not occurring merely as a predictable response to a disturbing life event such as a bereavement but assumed to be a manifestation of a psychological or biological dysfunction. Insanity refers to unsoundness of the mind or a mental disease that gives rise to a defect of reason that renders a person not liable in law for his actions. Insanity plea is a legal argument that an accused person should be exculpated from liability if his illegal act is attributable to mental illness. The plea hinges on the assumption of freewill and responsibility for one's action and on the presumption that everyone is of a sound mind until the contrary is proved.

Country | : | Nigeria |
Authors | : | Emmanuel Ekpedoho Abiama || Mike Chuka Ifeagwazi |
Abstract: The study participants were 97 care-givers (relatives and friends of mental patients) drawn from the Psychiatric Unit of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital and the Psychiatric Hospital Eket. Their ages ranged from 17 to 63 years. Data were collected using the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). A cross-sectional research design was used in the study while a 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was adopted for data analysis. Findings indicated that burden of care had a significant influence on mental health of care-givers, F (1, 93) = 8.40, p. < 0.01. Also, gender had a significant influence on mental health of care-givers, F (1, 93) = 9.52, p < 0.01. Findings were discussed with particular reference to providing intrinsic motivation to care-givers and a reform of the health system in Nigeria.
