Abstract: Glutathione metabolism plays an important role in malaria infected red blood cells and parasite itself. Glutathione-S-Transferase (GST), an antioxidant enzyme plays vital role in protecting the parasite from host induced oxidative damage. During the present study, GST activity was found exhibit concomitant increase with increasing parasitaemia in the erythrocytes and as well as in cell free extract of Plasmodium berghei (NK-65), there by suggesting that erythrocytes are under oxidative stress. Results of present study showed 2 fold increase in specific activity of GST at parasitaemia i.e. 20% to 35% which increased to 2.5 fold at 55% parasitaemia. This study suggests the role of GST activity as novel candidate for biochemical markers in malaria..

Abstract: Green nanotechnology is gaining importance due to the elimination of harmful reagents and provides effective synthesis of expected products in an economically manner. In the present investigation aqueous leaf extract of Polygonum glabrum Willd. was used for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The colour of reaction mixture was changes from colouless to brown colour indicates the formation of silver nanoparticles, further confirmed by characteristic UV-Vis absorption peak at 429 nm. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by FTIR, Fluorescence Spectroscopy and SEM. Fluorescence Spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study the tertiary structure of proteins. FTIR data revels that biomolecules involved in the reduction and capping of silver nanoparticles. The SEM result shows the size of nanoparticles ranges from 10 to 35 nm and are spherical in shape. XRD data showed that crystalline nature of nanosilver. The biogenic silver nanoparticles showed excellent antimicrobial activity against S. typhi, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S.aureus..

Abstract: One advantage that earned herbal products acceptance and usage over conventional drugs is their low toxicity. Recognizing the need for more information on safety issues regarding terpenes in medicinal plants, this study examined the terpene profile of the roots of Ficus capensis, Morinda lucida and Rauvolfia vomitoria used in traditional medicine in Nigeria. The roots were obtained from Umuagwo forests, Ohaji in Imo State, South-Eastern Nigeria and made into powder. The powder was analysed for terpene content using FET headspace GC-FID. No terpene was detected in R. vomitoria; F. capensis contained only p- cymene (0.0033%) and d 3- carene (0.0021%) in quantifiable amounts, and M. lucida had α-pinene (0.0034%), β -myrcene (0.0023%), d 3-carene (0.0127%), limonene (0.0017%) and p-cymene (0.0110%). The terpene contents of these medical plants were generally low to cause any significant risk upon consumption..
