Abstract: Objective: To understand the maternal perception of skin-to-skin contact with the newborn in the first hour of life. Methodology: This is a descriptive, exploratory research of a qualitative nature, in a school hospital, counting on the participation of 15 puerperae selected through a non-probabilistic sampling. Results: The testimonies of women showed the different feelings that encompass this unique moment for mothers, such as love, affection and tranquility, and the skin is the largest organ of the senses. The experience of skin-to-skin contact provides several benefits for maternal and newborn health. Final Considerations: It was noticed the ignorance of the puerperas before the importance of the realization of the skin-to-skin contact, at the same time that all reported in a positive way this event, even without knowing the diverse benefits that encompass this unique moment.
